When the Noise Inside Your Head Won't Turn Down
Written by Michael Gardner, Founder/Developer of Coach Roger
You turn off the lights. You pull up the sheets. And suddenly, your brain decides it is time to review every awkward thing you said in 2021.
Same patterns. Same frustrations. The day is over, but the processing is not.
Most wellness advice tells you to clear your mind. Empty it out. Think of a peaceful beach. As if turning off your brain is as simple as flipping a light switch. You have tried that, of course. And when the beach doesn't appear, you get annoyed with yourself. You add frustration to the fatigue.
Let’s try a different way.
The Trouble with Fighting Your Own Mind
Your mind is not broken because it is noisy. It is noisy because it is trying to keep you safe. It is sorting through the debris of the day, looking for loose ends to tie up before morning.
When you tell yourself to stop thinking, you start a civil war. You are fighting yourself with your own weapons. And the noise only gets louder.
Shame loves these moments. It whispers that you should be calmer by now. That a well-adjusted person would be sleeping. That you are failing at rest, of all things.
None of that is true. Being tired and wired is simply what happens when you are human in a complicated world. You do not need a grand intervention. You need a way to let the noise exist without letting it run the house.
Meeting the Noise with Curiosity
Instead of trying to quiet the room, what if you just listened to what is actually being said?
When you stop running from the thoughts, they lose a little bit of their teeth. They are just sentences, after all. They are not orders.
Here are a few small, gentle ways to handle the evening volume:
- Name the loudest thought out loud, in a normal speaking voice, just to take its power away.
- Notice where your body is holding the tension—usually the jaw, the shoulders, or the space between your eyebrows—and drop them by a fraction of an inch.
- Open Coach Roger and do a two-minute stress reset or a low-pressure mood check-in to get the thoughts out of your head and onto a screen.
- Drop the requirement for sleep and give yourself permission to just rest here, horizontally, without fixing anything.
Reconstruction, Not Transformation
Nobody is grading how you wind down. You don't get a gold star for a silent mind, and you haven't ruined anything if your thoughts are racing.
You are just putting the pieces back together in a shape that fits the life you actually have. Some nights, that shape includes a bit of static.
If the day is heavy and the night is long, remember that you don't have to solve your entire life before morning. You just have to get through this specific minute. And you are already doing that.
Take a breath. Let your shoulders drop. Tomorrow can wait for tomorrow.
Warmly, Michael
