When Monday Morning Already Feels Heavy

Written by Michael Gardner, Founder/Developer of Coach Roger

You woke up and the weight was already there, waiting on the edge of the mattress before your feet even hit the floor. Same patterns. Same old frustrations. The week hasn't even properly begun, and you are already tired of pretending you have the momentum for it.

Let's be completely honest for a second. Most advice you read on a Monday morning is written by people who seem to live in perpetual sunshine, telling you to jump out of bed, swallow some gross green juice, and conquer your goals with a terrifying grin. They want you to hustle. They want you to transform.

I built Coach Roger because I got tired of that lie. I wanted a space that acknowledges reality: sometimes the day is just heavy, and your nervous system is braced for impact.

Being stuck is not a character flaw. It is what happens when the gap between where you are and where you think you should be gets wide enough that the whole system shuts down to protect itself. Your body isn't failing you. It is trying to keep you safe from a list of demands that was probably unreasonable to begin with.

Shame is the heaviest thing anyone carries, and it never motivates. Guilt tells you that you missed a deadline or dropped a ball, which can be useful information. Shame tells you that because you are struggling with a Monday, you are fundamentally broken. Shame thrives in secrecy and hiding.

So let's put down the grand transformation plans. Nobody needs to become a brand-new person by noon. You are just putting the pieces back together in a shape that fits the life you actually have.

If you are staring down a long week right now, forget the massive overhauls. We are going for tiny promises kept to yourself. Consistency beats intensity every single time. A modest thing done regularly outperforms an ambitious plan that makes you want to crawl back under the covers.

Here is a simple, zero-pressure way to anchor yourself when the morning feels like too much:

  • Name the weight out loud: Say what you are feeling to an empty room or type it into your morning check-in on Coach Roger. Getting it out of your head strips it of half its shadow.
  • Drop your shoulders: Literally. Drop them away from your ears right now. Take one slow breath that doesn't try to fix anything, just fills your lungs.
  • Make one tiny promise: Pick a ridiculously small thing—drinking a glass of water before looking at your email, or stepping outside for sixty seconds of fresh air—and keep that promise to yourself.

Self-respect is built on small promises kept on bad days. Not grand gestures. Each tiny action is a deposit in the bank of self-trust.

You do not have to love Mondays. You don't even have to conquer this one. You just have to move through it, piece by piece, exactly as you are.

Take care, Michael
