The Sunday Evening Shift: Softening the Transition to Monday
Written by Michael Gardner, Founder/Developer of Coach Roger
Finding a Softer Start
It’s Monday morning, July 6. If you’re reading this today, you might be feeling that familiar "gear-up" energy—the feeling of the world speeding up as the new week begins. But I actually want to talk about the 24 hours that led you here.
I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about the "Sunday Scaries." You know the feeling: that low-level hum of anxiety that kicks in around 4:00 PM on Sunday. Even as the founder of Coach Roger, I’m not immune to it. Between managing the app’s development and wanting to be present for my family, my brain often starts racing through to-do lists long before the sun comes up on Monday.
What I’ve learned—and what I tried to build into the heart of Coach Roger—is that we don't have to crash into our week. We can transition into it. Today, I want to share a few ways to soften that shift so that your Monday feels like a natural progression rather than a jolting wake-up call.
The Myth of the 'Productive' Reset
Often, when we feel stressed about the coming week, our instinct is to over-prepare. We make massive lists, clean the entire house, and try to solve every problem in advance. While there is a time and place for organization, doing it from a place of panic usually just fuels more stress.
I’ve found that a "gentle transition" isn't about doing more; it’s about lowering the volume of your nervous system. In the app, our Stress Resets aren't designed to make your problems disappear, but to change how your body reacts to them. When we approach Monday from a place of physiological calm, the tasks ahead of us suddenly look much more manageable.
Small Steps for a Gentler Transition
If you find your heart rate climbing as the weekend ends, or if you woke up this morning feeling like you were already behind, try these small, intentional shifts:
- The 10-Minute Brain Dump: Before you settle in for the evening, grab a notebook or open the Journaling tab in the app. Write down everything swirling in your head—no matter how small. Once it’s on paper (or screen), your brain doesn't have to work so hard to remember it.
- Select Your 'Anchor': Pick one gentle movement or nourish habit for Monday morning that makes you feel good. Maybe it’s a five-minute stretch or a favorite tea. Focus on that one pleasant thing instead of the entire week.
- Close the Loops: Pick one tiny task that’s been nagging at you—like watering a plant or responding to a non-urgent text—and do it. Completing a "micro-task" gives your brain a hit of dopamine and a sense of agency.
- Lower the Lights: About an hour before you want to sleep, dim the lights. This signals to your nervous system that the "doing" time is over and the "being" time has begun. Navigate to the Sleep section in the app for a wind-down if your mind is still racing.
- Connect with a Human: Send a quick text to a friend or post a positive thought in our community group. Reminding yourself that you are part of a supportive network can significantly lower feelings of isolation and stress.
A Note on Persistent Stress
It is completely normal to feel a bit of tension as you face your responsibilities. However, if you find that your stress feels unmanageable, or if your mood feels consistently heavy and dark, please remember that you don't have to carry it alone. While Coach Roger is here to support your daily well-being, it isn't a substitute for professional mental health care. If you are in the US and experiencing a crisis, you can always reach out to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988 any time of day or night.
Moving Into Your Week
As you navigate today, try to be patient with yourself. You don’t need to have every answer by noon. You don’t need to be "perfectly productive." You just need to be present.
If things start to feel overwhelming, take a moment to use the AI voice coach or a quick breathing exercise in the app. These tools are there because I know how hard it can be to remember to breathe when the world gets loud. You’re doing better than you think you are, and I’m glad we’re building these healthier habits together.
Be kind to yourself today,
