The 'Second-Wind' Trap: How to Soften Your Friday Night
Written by Michael Gardner, Founder/Developer of Coach Roger
The Friday Night Illusion
It’s finally Friday. You’ve navigated the meetings, the deadlines, and the general hum of a busy week. Often, as we close our laptops or clock out for the last time, a strange thing happens: we get a 'second wind.'
I’ve been there myself many times. As the developer of Coach Roger, I spend my days staring at code and thinking about how to help you feel better, and when Friday hits, my brain often screams, “We’re free! Let’s stay up late, finish that project, or scroll through everything we missed!” It feels like energy, but usually, it’s just adrenaline masking a very tired nervous system.
When we lean too hard into that Friday night surge, we often end up paying for it on Saturday morning. We wake up feeling 'hungover' from exhaustion, rushing into the weekend without ever actually having rested. Today, I want to talk about the power of the gentle transition—the art of folding the week away instead of slamming the door shut.
The Cost of the All-Night Decompression
We often feel like we owe it to ourselves to stay up late on Fridays because we worked so hard all week. It feels like reclaiming our time. But true reclamation isn’t about how many hours we can stay awake; it’s about the quality of the rest we allow ourselves to have.
When we push through that natural sleep window, we disrupt our circadian rhythm. This can lead to a 'social jetlag' that makes Monday morning feel twice as hard as it needs to be. More importantly, when we are in that high-adrenaline 'second-wind' state, we aren't actually relaxing—we’re just spinning our wheels in a different lane.
If you’re feeling particularly low or overwhelmed tonight, please remember that you don’t have to carry it all alone. While Coach Roger is here to help you build healthy daily habits, it isn't medical care or a crisis service. If you're in the US and feeling like things are too heavy, you can always reach out to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988 any time.
Creating a Soft Landing
To move from 'work mode' to 'weekend mode' without crashing or overextending, we need a bridge. Think of it as a soft landing for your brain. Instead of jumping straight from a high-stress environment into a dark room and expecting sleep to happen, we can use a few gentle tools to signal to our bodies that the week is officially over.
Here are some small, practical ways to soften your Friday night transition:
- The Physical Sign-Off: Close your laptop, put your work bag in a closet, or change into 'home clothes' immediately. This physical ritual tells your brain the shift has happened.
- Low-Light Transition: As soon as the sun goes down, switch off the overhead lights. Use lamps or warm lighting to encourage melatonin production and signal that it's time to slow down.
- A Gentle Brain Dump: If your mind is still racing with things you didn't finish, grab a notebook. Spend three minutes writing down everything that can wait until Monday. Once it’s on paper, your brain doesn't have to work so hard to remember it.
- Screen-Free Decompression: Try a 'Nourish' activity from the app or listen to a gentle wind-down audio instead of scrolling through social media. The blue light from phones can keep that second wind going longer than is healthy.
- Simple Movement: A five-minute 'Move' session—just some gentle neck rolls or a seated cat-cow stretch—can help release the tension held in your shoulders from a week of sitting or standing.
Listening to the Quiet Voice
Building Coach Roger has taught me that wellness isn't about doing everything perfectly; it’s about listening to the quiet voice inside that says, “I’m actually pretty tired.”
Tonight, when that burst of Friday energy hits, take a second to check in. Is it real energy, or is it just the relief of being done? If it’s relief, give yourself permission to honor that by resting. You don't have to earn your rest by being productive on a Friday night. You’ve done enough this week.
The weekend will still be there tomorrow, and you’ll enjoy it so much more if you start it with a full battery. Whether you use the sleep wind-downs in the app or just tuck yourself in an hour earlier than usual, I hope you find a way to be kind to yourself tonight.
You’ve had a long week, and you've handled it. Now, it's time to let go.
Be well,
Michael Gardner Founder, Coach Roger
