The Power of the 'Micro-Pause': Finding Stillness in a Busy Day
Written by Michael Gardner, Founder/Developer of Coach Roger
Building Coach Roger has taught me a lot about the pace of modern life. As an independent developer, I spend many hours staring at screens, squashing bugs, and thinking about how to make our community feel more supported. It’s easy to get swept up in the 'doing' and completely forget the 'being.' Truthfully, there have been many days where I looked up at the clock and realized I hadn't taken a full, deep breath in hours.
Maybe you’ve felt that too. That feeling of being a passenger in your own afternoon, propelled forward by notifications, deadlines, or an endless to-do list. When we live in that constant state of high gear, our stress levels creep up without us even realizing it.
That’s why I want to talk about something I’ve been practicing lately: the Micro-Pause. It’s a tiny, intentional window of time where you give yourself permission to do absolutely nothing.
What is a Micro-Pause?
A Micro-Pause isn't a twenty-minute meditation (though those are great!). It’s a 30-to-60-second reset. It is the act of momentarily stepping off the treadmill of your thoughts to check back in with your body.
When I was designing the mindfulness tools for Coach Roger, my goal wasn't to turn everyone into Zen masters. I just wanted us to have a way to lower the temperature when things feel heated. A Micro-Pause serves as a circuit breaker for stress. It tells your nervous system, "We are safe, we are here, and we can handle the next hour."
Why Small Moments Matter
We often fall into the trap of thinking that wellness requires big, sweeping changes—radical diets, hour-long workouts, or total digital detoxes. But in my experience, real change happens in the small, quiet spaces.
When you take sixty seconds to just feel your feet on the floor, you aren't just resting; you’re retraining your brain. You’re teaching yourself that you have the agency to choose your state of mind. It’s a small act of rebellion against a world that demands your constant attention.
If you find yourself struggling with persistent low mood or overwhelming anxiety that feels like more than just a busy day, please remember that you don't have to carry it alone. Coach Roger is a tool for daily well-being, but it isn't a replacement for professional clinical care. If you’re ever in a dark place and need immediate support, you can always reach out to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline in the US.
How to Practice Your First Micro-Pause
You don’t need a special pillow or a quiet room to do this. You can do it while the coffee is brewing, while you're waiting for a file to download, or right before you step out of your car.
- The Physical Anchor: Soften your shoulders away from your ears. We hold so much tension there without knowing it. Let your jaw uncheck and feel the weight of your body in your chair or on your feet.
- The Three-Breath Reset: Take three slow breaths. Don’t try to force them to be "perfect." Just notice the cool air coming in and the warm air leaving. On the third exhale, imagine letting go of the tension from your last task.
- Sensory Check-in: Name one thing you can hear, one thing you can see, and one thing you can feel (like the texture of your sleeves). This yanks your brain out of the future or the past and puts it right back into the present.
- The Gentle Transition: Before you jump back into work or chores, ask yourself: "What is the most helpful thing I can do for myself in the next hour?" Maybe it’s a glass of water, or maybe it’s just focusing on one task at a time.
Making it a Habit
The beauty of these tiny resets is that they are low-stakes. If you forget to do one, no big deal. You can just do it whenever you remember. I’ve started setting a gentle reminder on my phone once in the morning and once in the afternoon just to prompt a Micro-Pause.
When we built the Habit-Building and Check-in features in the app, it was with this philosophy in mind. Consistency over intensity. Being kind to yourself is far more effective than being strict with yourself.
As you go through your Thursday, I encourage you to try just one Micro-Pause. See how it feels to give yourself sixty seconds of peace. You’ve earned it, and your mind will thank you for the breather.
I’m so glad you’re part of this community. We’re all just taking it one breath at a time, together.
Be kind to yourself,
Michael Gardner Founder, Coach Roger
