The Kitchen Counter Check-In: Mindful Presence While You Pour

Written by Michael Gardner, Founder/Developer of Coach Roger

The Hidden Pockets of Your Morning

I’ll be honest with you: as an independent developer, my mornings used to be a blurred sprint toward my laptop. I’d roll out of bed, shuffle to the kitchen, and stand over the coffee maker with a sort of frantic impatience, checking emails on my phone while the machine hissed and sputtered. I was physically in my kitchen, but mentally, I was already three hours into a stressful workday.

When I was building Coach Roger, I realized that I was missing out on the very thing I was trying to help others find—those tiny, unscripted moments of peace that exist in the gaps of our routines. We often think mindfulness requires a meditation cushion and thirty minutes of silence, but some of the most profound shifts happen right at the kitchen counter.

Thursday mornings can feel particularly heavy. We’re deep enough into the week to feel the accumulation of stress, but just far enough from the weekend that the finish line feels blurry. This is why I want to talk about the "Kitchen Counter Check-In."

Making Use of the 'In-Between' Time

We all have those little pockets of waiting built into our days. It’s the two minutes the kettle takes to whistle, the sixty seconds the microwave runs, or the time it takes for the toaster to pop. Usually, we fill these gaps with digital noise—scrolling through headlines or checking social media notifications.

What if, just for today, we reclaimed that time?

Setting the phone down on the counter is a small act of rebellion against the constant pull of the "productivity" monster. By choosing to simply be while the water boils, you’re telling your nervous system that it’s okay to be still. You’re teaching yourself that you don’t need to be constantly 'on' to be worthy of a good day.

How to Practice the Counter Check-In

This isn't a rigid ritual or a complex breathing exercise. It’s just about noticing. The next time you find yourself waiting in the kitchen—whether it’s for your morning tea, your lunch to heat up, or a glass of water to fill—try these steps to ground yourself:

  • Feel your feet: Notice the sensation of your socks against the floor or the cold tile under your heels. Let your weight settle evenly.
  • Find one sound: Instead of internal chatter, listen to the hum of the refrigerator, the sound of the wind outside, or the bubbling of the water. Just notice the texture of the sound.
  • Soft hands: Notice if you’re clenching your jaw or gripping the edge of the counter. Purposefully soften your hands and let your shoulders drop half an inch.
  • The 'Nourish' breath: Take one deep breath in through your nose, feeling your ribs expand, and let it out through your mouth like you’re blowing out a candle.
  • Acknowledge the transition: Remind yourself: "Right now, I am just making tea." You don't have to solve the 3:00 PM problem at 8:00 AM.

Gentle Progress, Not Perfection

I created Coach Roger because I know how hard it is to stay present when life feels fast. Throughout the app, whether you’re using the 'Nourish' section for gentle food awareness or hitting a 'Stress Reset,' the goal is always the same: to return to yourself.

If you find your mind racing toward your to-do list while you're standing there, that’s okay. That’s just what brains do. When you notice it happening, gently bring your focus back to the steam rising from the cup or the weight of the ceramic in your hand.

These tiny moments are like stitches in a quilt. On their own, they might seem small, but when you gather enough of them throughout the week, they create a safety net of calm that helps you handle the bigger stressors when they inevitably arrive.

(A quick note: If you’re feeling an overwhelming sense of low mood or anxiety that these small shifts aren't reaching, please remember that Coach Roger is a wellness tool, not medical care. If you need immediate support, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline in the US is a wonderful, free resource available 24/7.)

Today, I’m going to try to leave my phone in the other room while I brew my coffee. I hope you’ll join me in a Kitchen Counter Check-In of your own. You deserve those two minutes of peace precisely because you have so much on your plate.

Be kind to yourself today,
