The Art of the Tiny Move: Gentle Motion for Low-Energy Days

Written by Michael Gardner, Founder/Developer of Coach Roger

When Big Workouts Feel Out of Reach

Happy Saturday, friends. If you woke up today feeling heavy, tired, or simply lacking the motivation for a traditional workout, I want to offer you a very gentle reminder: that is completely okay.

When I first started building Coach Roger, I used to fall into the all-or-nothing trap myself. I thought that if I wasn't running three miles or spending forty-five minutes lifting weights, I wasn't really taking care of my body. But life doesn't always hand us high-energy days. Sometimes, just getting out of bed takes most of what we have.

That is why I am such a firm believer in what I call the "tiny move." You don't need a gym membership, a matching outfit, or a burst of intense willpower to invite a little physical comfort into your day. You just need a willingness to notice where your body is holding tension and offer it a tiny bit of relief.

Why Micro-Movement Matters

Motion doesn't have to be strenuous to be powerful. Even a very small shift in physical posture or a gentle stretch sends a signal to your nervous system that it is safe to soften. When we sit or lie still for long periods—which is so easy to do on a quiet weekend—our muscles tighten and our minds can easily get stuck in looping, anxious thoughts.

Moving gently helps break that loop. It brings you back into the physical container of your body. It isn't about burning calories or checking off a fitness goal. It's about kindness. It's about saying to your shoulders, "Hey, you can drop away from your ears now," or whispering to your lower back, *"Let's stretch out just a little bit."

Finding Your Flow Without Pressure

If you want to invite a little gentle movement into your Saturday without any pressure to perform, here are a few simple ways to start:

  • The Bedside Reach: Before your feet even touch the floor, stretch your arms as high overhead as they can go, take a deep breath, and then slowly let them float back down.
  • The Kitchen Counter Sway: While waiting for your coffee or tea to brew, put on a favorite song and just gently sway your hips or roll your ankles for two minutes.
  • The Seated Spinal Twist: Sit comfortably in a chair, place one hand on the opposite knee, and gently look over your shoulder for a breath or two before switching sides.
  • The Five-Minute Neighborhood Walk: Step outside just to feel the air on your face, walk to the end of the driveway and back, and let the outside world greet you.

None of these steps require intensity. If any movement hurts, please stop immediately. The goal is simply to invite ease, not to push through pain.

Take it easy on yourself today. You are doing wonderfully just by showing up for yourself, one small breath and one tiny movement at a time.

Warmly, Michael
