Stretching Through the Afternoon Slump: A Gentle Move
Written by Michael Gardner, Founder/Developer of Coach Roger
The Three O'Clock Reality
Hey everyone, Michael here.
Have you ever hit that specific stretch in the afternoon—usually right around three o'clock—where your brain feels like it's wading through warm molasses and your shoulders have somehow migrated up toward your ears? I know that feeling well. When I'm deep into coding or working on new features for Coach Roger, I often look down and realize I've been holding my breath and hunching over my keyboard for the last two hours.
For a long time, my instinct when I felt that slump was to force my way through it, or reach for a third cup of coffee that I definitely didn't need. But over the years of building this app and listening to what all of you share in our community check-ins, I’ve learned a much kinder approach. Movement doesn't have to mean a punishing workout or a sweaty trip to the gym. Sometimes, what our bodies are asking for is just a little bit of space.
Why Gentle Motion Changes Everything
When we sit for long stretches, our circulation slows down, our muscles tighten up to hold us in place, and our minds naturally mirror that physical stagnation. We start feeling stuck mentally because we are physically locked in one position.
That's why I built our "Move" feature inside Coach Roger—not to track calories or push you toward rigid fitness goals, but to help you reconnect with your physical body in a way that feels good. You don't need spandex, a mat, or even ten minutes to make a difference. You just need a willingness to notice where you're holding tension and invite a little softness back in.
Think of gentle movement as a reset button for your nervous system. When you stretch your arms overhead or roll your ankles, you're sending a physical signal to your brain that says, "Hey, we're safe, we're alive, and we can let go of the armor for a minute."
Your Afternoon Reset Practice
The next time you feel that heavy afternoon fog rolling in, I invite you to step away from whatever screen is in front of you. Try these four simple, zero-pressure steps:
- Unclench and Drop: Notice your jaw, your hands, and your shoulders. Intentionally let them drop away from your ears and take one deep, slow breath.
- The Reach: Stand up if you can, or stay seated, and reach your arms as high toward the ceiling as feels comfortable, stretching through your fingertips.
- The Gentle Twist: Gently rotate your torso from side to side, letting your arms hang loose like empty shirtsleeves to wake up your spine.
- A Short Stroll: Take a slow walk to get a glass of water, letting your arms swing naturally and feeling your feet connect with the floor beneath you.
There's no right or wrong way to do this. If your body asks for a deep stretch, take it. If it just wants a gentle sway, do that instead.
Take care of yourselves this weekend, and I'll see you on Monday.
