Stepping Away from the Screen: A Natural Stress Reset

Written by Michael Gardner, Founder/Developer of Coach Roger

Hey everyone, Michael here. Founder of Coach Roger, fellow human, and someone who occasionally realizes he has been staring at a glowing rectangle for three hours straight without blinking.

Monday afternoons have a funny way of sneaking up on us. Between catching up on emails, checking notifications, and navigating the general hum of the workday, our nervous systems often take quite a beating. If you are feeling that familiar tight chest or buzzing brain right now, take a deep breath. You are definitely not alone in this.

When stress starts to build up, our first instinct is often to look for another distraction. We open another tab, check another app, or scroll through a feed hoping for a quick mental break. But honestly? Most of the time, that digital noise just adds more static to an already crowded mind. What our bodies and brains are usually craving is a true pause—a clean break from the input.

Why a Physical Break Changes Everything

When I built Coach Roger, I wanted it to be a tool that helps you step away from the noise, rather than pulling you deeper into it. Your phone is great for a quick mood check-in or a guided breathing exercise, but the real magic happens when you put the device down and interact with the physical world around you.

Stepping away from screens isn't about being hard on yourself or declaring a digital detox. It is simply about giving your eyes a chance to focus on something more than two feet away, and giving your brain permission to stop processing information for a few quiet moments.

If you are feeling heavy, overwhelmed, or just plain tired today, please remember that it is okay to put things down. If heavy feelings ever feel too big to carry alone, or if you are going through a particularly tough time, please remember that support is out there. In the US, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is always available by calling or texting 988, completely free and confidential. Taking care of your mental health sometimes means recognizing when you need an extra layer of support.

For right now, let’s try a very small, very gentle physical reset together. No apps required.

Your Screen-Free Reset for Today

  • Step outside or stand by a window: Let your eyes look as far into the distance as you comfortably can, giving those screen-strained muscles a break.
  • Drop your shoulders: Roll them backward twice, unclench your jaw, and let your arms hang heavy by your sides.
  • Take three slow breaths: Inhale through your nose for a count of four, and exhale slowly through your mouth like you are blowing out a birthday candle.
  • Notice three physical textures: Touch the desk, your clothing, or a wall nearby, and really feel what they feel like under your fingers to bring yourself back into the room.

Moving Forward With Ease

You don’t need to overhaul your entire day to feel a little bit better. Sometimes, a sixty-second pause by the window is all it takes to reset the dial.

Take care of yourselves this week, and don't forget to step away from the screen when your eyes start to get heavy. I'm right here cheering you on, one small moment at a time.

Warmly, Michael
