Slowing Down the Clock: A Sunday Habit for Easier Mornings

Written by Michael Gardner, Founder/Developer of Coach Roger

Hey everyone, Michael here.

Sundays have a strange way of speeding up right as they're supposed to be slowing down. You might be sitting on the couch, enjoying the quiet, when a sudden quiet whisper in the back of your mind reminds you of Monday morning. Suddenly, your shoulders creep up toward your ears, and that weekend relaxation starts to slip right through your fingers.

When I first started building Coach Roger, I noticed this exact pattern in my own life. I'd spend all weekend trying to "make the most of it," only to exhaust myself and crash right before the work week began. I realized I was treating Sunday like a final sprint rather than a bridge.

Building habits isn't just about drinking enough water or going to the gym; it's also about building gentle buffers into our time. We need ways to transition from rest back into responsibility without feeling like we're being jolted awake by an alarm clock for our souls.

That's why I want to share a tiny, low-pressure Sunday habit that has completely changed how I head into a new week. I call it the "ten-minute preview." It has nothing to do with rushing or planning out every single hour. Instead, it's about clearing just enough mental clutter so your pillow feels a little softer tonight.

Here is how you can try it out for yourself this evening:

  • Pick one anchor task: Choose just one small thing that would genuinely make tomorrow morning kinder to future-you, like setting out a favorite mug or laying out comfortable clothes.
  • Close the tabs: Take thirty seconds to clear off any physical clutter around your workspace or kitchen counter so you aren't greeted by chaos with your first cup of coffee.
  • Write a low-stakes list: Jot down three things on your mind that you want to carry into the week, just to get them out of your head and onto paper.
  • Give yourself permission to stop: Once those ten minutes are up, intentionally close your notebook, step away, and let the rest of the evening belong completely to rest.

Habits stick best when they feel like an act of care rather than a chore. If you skip this tonight, please don't beat yourself up. There's always next week, and you are doing better than you think.

Take care of yourselves tonight, and I'll see you in the app tomorrow.

Warmly, Michael
