Monday's Quiet Entry: Softening the Start of Your Week
Written by Michael Gardner, Founder/Developer of Coach Roger
The Morning Rush vs. The Gentle Start
Happy Monday, everyone. I’m Michael, the developer behind Coach Roger. As I was building this app, I spent a lot of time thinking about Mondays. For years, I approached the start of the week like a sprinter behind the blocks—tense, breathless, and ready to bolt the moment the alarm went off. I thought that by rushing, I was being productive. In reality, I was just starting my week in a state of high cortisol and low presence.
Today, I want to talk about the 'Quiet Entry.' It’s a practice I’ve been working on, and it’s something we’ve woven into the fabric of the app. It’s the idea that your Monday doesn’t have to be an explosion of activity. You are allowed to wade into the week rather than diving headfirst into a cold pool.
Why We Feel the 'Monday Pressure'
There is a specific kind of stress that arrives on Monday mornings. It’s the weight of the collective 'to-do' list, the unread emails, and the expectations we place on ourselves to be 'on.' When I created Coach Roger, I wanted to provide a counterweight to that pressure. We often feel like if we don’t start Monday at 100%, the whole week is a failure.
But life isn't a race, and your nervous system doesn't know the difference between a work deadline and a genuine threat. When we rush, we signal to our bodies that we are in danger. By choosing a quiet entry, we tell our systems that we are safe, capable, and in control of our own tempo.
Practicing the Quiet Entry
You don’t need to change your entire life to have a better Monday. It’s about the small, intentional choices you make in the first sixty minutes of your day. Here are a few ways you can soften your transition into the week:
- The Five-Minute Buffer: Instead of checking your phone the moment your eyes open, give yourself five minutes of just existing. Notice the light in the room or the weight of your blankets.
- Hydrate Before You Caffeinate: Before the coffee or tea, have a glass of water. It’s a gentle way to wake up your internal systems without the immediate jolt of caffeine.
- A Single Intentional Movement: This isn't a workout. It’s just a stretch, a slow reach toward the ceiling, or rolling your shoulders while the kettle boils.
- The 'One Big Thing' Rule: Look at your list and pick just one thing that truly matters today. Everything else is secondary. This reduces the mental clutter that causes Monday morning paralysis.
- Check-In With Roger: Open the app and do a quick mood check-in. Just naming how you feel—even if you feel 'tired' or 'anxious'—can take the power away from those emotions.
Finding Your Own Rhythm
I used to think that wellness was about doing everything perfectly—eating the right food, sleeping exactly eight hours, and never feeling stressed. But building Coach Roger taught me that wellness is actually about self-compassion. It’s about recognizing when you’re pushing too hard and giving yourself permission to slow down.
If today feels particularly heavy, please remember to be kind to yourself. If your stress feels overwhelming or you find yourself in a dark place, please reach out for professional support or call the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (in the US). This app is a tool for daily support, but your health is the most important thing.
A Final Thought for Your Monday
You don't have to win the week by 9:00 AM. You just have to be present for it. Try to find one moment today where you can stop, take a deep breath, and realize that you are doing enough just by being here. We built the Move and Nourish sections of the app specifically for days like today—not to add more tasks to your list, but to give you a place to land when the world feels loud.
I’m rooting for you today. Let’s take this week one gentle step at a time.
Be well,
Michael Gardner Founder, Coach Roger
