Finding Quiet in the Noise: A Weekend Mindfulness Check-In
Written by Michael Gardner, Founder/Developer of Coach Roger
Hello friend,
It is Michael here, the developer behind Coach Roger. As we ease into this Saturday, I wanted to take a moment to talk about something I have been working on in my own life lately: simply noticing where I am.
Life has a way of speeding up, even on weekends. Between catching up on chores, running errands, or just letting our minds race through the upcoming week, it is remarkably easy to float through our days on autopilot. Our bodies might be sitting right here on the couch, but our minds are usually three steps ahead or replaying something from yesterday.
When I first started trying to practice mindfulness years ago, I thought I was doing it wrong. I assumed I needed to clear my mind completely, sit cross-legged in absolute silence, and find some kind of profound inner peace. Unsurprisingly, that approach usually left me more frustrated than calm. My brain is far too chatty for that!
What I have learned since—and what I try to remind myself of through Coach Roger every day—is that mindfulness is not about stopping the noise. It is simply about noticing that the noise is there, taking a gentle breath, and choosing to anchor ourselves in the present moment, even if just for ten seconds.
The Power of the Five-Sense Anchor
One of my favorite ways to step out of my head and back into my body is a very simple exercise that requires no special meditation cushion or quiet room. You can do it while sitting with your morning coffee, folding laundry, or walking out to get the mail.
It is called a sensory check-in. Instead of trying to force relaxation, you just let your senses do the work for you.
How to Try It Right Now
- Notice two things you can see: Look around and truly look at something ordinary—the way the light hits your coffee mug, or the texture of the wall across the room.
- Notice two things you can touch: Feel the fabric of your shirt against your skin, or the cool surface of a table beneath your hands.
- Notice one thing you can hear: Listen past the obvious sounds to find something subtle, like a distant bird or the hum of the refrigerator.
There is no grade here, and there is no right or wrong way to feel. If your mind wanders off to your grocery list three seconds in, that is completely okay. Just gently notice it and bring your attention back to the physical world.
If you find yourself having a heavy week or feeling overwhelmed by stress, remember that it is okay to ask for support. If things ever feel truly too heavy, please know that the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is always there for you in the US, offering free, confidential support 24/7.
Take it easy on yourself today, and I hope you find at least one quiet moment that belongs entirely to you.
Warmly, Michael
