Closing the Week: A Friday Habit for Letting Go
Written by Michael Gardner, Founder/Developer of Coach Roger
Stepping Across the Friday Line
Friday afternoons have a strange duality to them. On one side, there is the palpable relief that the weekend is finally within arm's reach. On the other, there is often a lingering fatigue—a heavy backpack of mental tabs we’ve kept open since Monday morning, emails we didn't quite get to, and goals we feel we should have accomplished faster.
When I first started building Coach Roger, I used to fall straight into the trap of treating Fridays like a frantic sprint to the finish line. I’d cram in last-minute fixes, trying to clear my desk so I could start Monday with a clean slate. But almost every time, I ended up carrying that frantic energy right into Saturday morning, wondering why I couldn't relax.
Over time, I realized I needed a different kind of transition. Not a harder push, but a deliberate letting go.
The Power of a Weekly Bookend
Habits don't always have to be about adding more to your routine. Sometimes, the most powerful habits are subtractional—rituals that help us put things down.
Think about how we close physical spaces at the end of the day. We turn off the lights, shut the front door, and lock it. We need a similar boundary for our weeks. Without a mental closing ceremony, our brains keep spinning on problem-solving mode, chewing on work stress or family logistics long after we've clocked out.
Creating a simple Friday wind-down habit doesn't require a complicated spreadsheet or an hour of meditation. It’s simply about acknowledging the week that was, thanking yourself for getting through it, and consciously shifting gears.
A Gentle Friday Release
If you're feeling the weight of the week today, I invite you to try a very simple, low-pressure practice before you officially log off for the weekend.
- Find a quiet spot: Step away from your workspace, put your phone on silent for five minutes, and let your shoulders drop away from your ears.
- Do a quick mental inventory: Open up the journaling feature in Coach Roger or grab a scrap piece of paper. Write down three things that drained your energy this week, just to get them out of your head.
- Acknowledge your effort: Remind yourself of one difficult thing you navigated this week. You made it through, even if it wasn't graceful every second.
- Set one boundary: Choose one thing you are not going to worry about until Monday morning. Give yourself official permission to drop it.
- Choose a physical reset: Wash your face with warm water, stretch your arms overhead, or take a short walk outside to physically signal to your body that the workweek is behind you.
Be Gentle With Your Weekend
However your week went—whether it was deeply productive or felt entirely overwhelming—remember that you don't have to earn your rest. You are allowed to simply exist for the next couple of days.
Take care of yourself this weekend, and I'll be right here on Monday whenever you're ready to check back in.
Warmly, Michael
