Closing the Tab: A Simple Evening Wind-Down
Written by Michael Gardner, Founder/Developer of Coach Roger
That Over-Connected Feeling
Hey everyone, Michael here, founder of Coach Roger. Have you ever tried to go to sleep, only to find your brain replaying every conversation from the day, planning tomorrow's to-do list, or running through scenarios that haven't even happened yet? I know that feeling all too well.
When we spend our days jumping between tabs, notifications, and tasks, our minds develop a kind of digital momentum. Even after we close our laptops or put our phones down, our internal engine keeps right on spinning. We try to force sleep, but rest isn't a switch we can just flip on demand. It's a transition.
I built Coach Roger because I wanted a space that helps us honor these natural transitions. Just like a computer running too many background processes starts to lag, our minds need a chance to close those open tabs before we can recharge for the night.
Shifting From Doing to Being
The secret to a better night's rest isn't a complicated routine or an expensive gadget. It's simply signaling to your nervous system that the workday is officially over and that it is safe to let your guard down.
When we give ourselves permission to power down gradually, sleep stops feeling like a chore and starts feeling like the relief it's meant to be. This doesn't mean you need to meditate for an hour or read a dense philosophy book. It just means finding a small, comforting ritual that anchors you back in your body.
If you're having a really difficult time with sleep or feeling overwhelmed by persistent nighttime anxiety, please remember that Coach Roger is here to support your daily well-being, but it isn't a replacement for professional medical care. If things feel truly heavy, you can always reach out to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988 (in the US) for free, confidential support anytime.
A Gentle Evening Routine
To help bridge the gap between a busy day and a restful night, try integrating a few small, low-pressure steps into your routine tonight. Don't worry about doing them all—just pick one or two that feel inviting.
- Do a brain dump: Spend five minutes writing down whatever is rattling around in your head on a blank piece of paper so your mind doesn't have to hold onto it overnight.
- Dim the physical lights: Lower the lights in your living space an hour before bed to help your body naturally start producing melatonin.
- Step away from the scroll: Swap out social media or the news for something analog, like listening to calming instrumental music or reading a few pages of a light novel.
- Use a sleep wind-down: Open up Coach Roger and try a brief guided breathing exercise or a soothing audio wind-down to help quiet your thoughts.
- Notice three comforts: Before your eyes close, mentally name three simple physical comforts around you, like the softness of your pillow or the warmth of the blankets.
A Gentle Reminder for Tonight
Remember, your worth isn't tied to how productive your day was, and you don't have to figure everything out before tomorrow morning. Whatever didn't get done today will still be there tomorrow, and it will keep.
Be gentle with yourself as you wind down tonight. Let go of the need for perfection, take a deep breath, and allow yourself to rest. You've done enough for today.
Warmly, Michael
