Closing the Day's Book: A Gentle Evening Wind-Down

Written by Michael Gardner, Founder/Developer of Coach Roger

The Evening Transition

Hey everyone, Michael here. If you are anything like me, your mind likes to keep running long after your laptop is shut and the lights are dimmed. You lie down in the dark, and suddenly your brain decides it is the perfect time to replay that awkward conversation from three years ago or plan out tomorrow's to-do list.

When I first started building Coach Roger, evenings were my hardest hours. I would stare at the ceiling, feeling wired and tired all at once, wishing there was an easy way to turn off the mental noise. What I’ve learned since then is that our minds don't just switch off on command. They need a bridge—a gentle transition from the busyness of the day to the quiet of the night.

If you are having a tough time winding down lately, please remember to take it easy on yourself. Sleep struggles can make everything feel heavier, and if you are going through a really difficult season, reaching out to a professional or calling the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline in the US can offer a safe harbor. You don't have to carry heavy nights all by yourself.

Creating Your Own Evening Bridge

Wind-downs don't need to be complicated or take an hour. In fact, the simpler, the better. When we put too many rules around sleep, it can start to feel like another chore on our list. Instead, think of your wind-down as a small gift to your future self—a quiet pause to signal that the work day is truly done.

Here are a few small steps you can try tonight to help your body and mind settle in:

  • Dim the overhead lights an hour before bed and switch to warm, softer lamps.
  • Put your phone across the room so you aren't tempted to scroll in the dark.
  • Take three slow, deep belly breaths, letting your shoulders drop with each exhale.
  • Write down one lingering thought or worry on a scrap of paper, telling yourself you can pick it up tomorrow.

Resting Without Pressure

Some nights, even with the best routine, sleep just takes its time coming. That is completely okay, too. If you find yourself lying awake, try not to fight it. Sometimes, just accepting where you are in the moment—without frustration—takes away half the tension.

Take care of yourselves tonight, and I will see you tomorrow.

Warmly, Michael
