A Gentle Plate: Food Awareness Without the Rules
Written by Michael Gardner, Founder/Developer of Coach Roger
Hi everyone, Michael here. As the person who built Coach Roger, I spend a lot of time thinking about how we treat ourselves day to day. We talk a lot about stress, sleep, and movement, but today I want to touch on something we engage with three times a day (plus snacks): how we eat.
If you are anything like me, the world of food can sometimes feel a bit loud. Everywhere we look, there is a new rule, a restriction, or a strict guideline telling us what we should or shouldn't put on our plates. Over the years, I’ve found that those rigid frameworks rarely help us feel better. In fact, they often bring a quiet layer of stress and guilt to the kitchen table.
That is why I prefer a different approach—what we call gentle food awareness inside Coach Roger. It is not a diet. There are no tracking apps required, no point systems, and certainly no "good" or "bad" foods. Instead, it is about shifting from judgment to curiosity.
Getting Curious About Your Plate
Food awareness is simply the practice of tuning back into your own body. It asks a very gentle question: How does this actually feel in my body right now?
When we are stressed, busy, or running on fumes, it is so easy to eat on autopilot. We might finish a meal before we even notice the flavors, or reach for a comforting snack simply because the afternoon slump hit hard. There is no shame in that—we are all just trying to get through the day. But when we bring a little bit of mindfulness to our meals, amazing things start to happen naturally.
Instead of restricting what you eat, food awareness invites you to notice how different foods interact with your energy levels, your digestion, and your mood. Maybe you notice that a heavy lunch leaves you feeling foggy during your 2 PM work block, or perhaps a warm bowl of soup gives you a steady, comforting lift without a crash. You are the ultimate expert on your own body.
Small Steps Toward a Kinder Relationship with Food
You don't need to overhaul your entire kitchen or change how you eat overnight. In fact, the most sustainable changes are almost unnoticeably small. Here are a few simple ways to practice gentle food awareness this week:
- Take three breaths before your first bite: Pause for just ten seconds before you start eating to look at your food and let your nervous system know it is time to rest and digest.
- Check in midway: Halfway through your meal, pause and ask yourself how your hunger is feeling. There is no obligation to stop eating, but noticing the shift from hungry to satisfied is a wonderful sensory anchor.
- Notice the after-effect: Later today, gently reflect on how your afternoon meal made you feel an hour or two later—energized, heavy, cozy, or neutral?
Eating should be one of life's simple pleasures, not a test you are trying to pass. Be gentle with yourself, throw out the food rules, and see what happens when you simply pay kind attention to what you need.
Sending you warmth for the rest of your Tuesday,
Michael
